Keeping people connected

Established in 1999, Agni Page has introduced the Nepalese to a whole world of cutting-edge communication technology. As the distributor for a wide range of message pagers by Motorola, the world’s leading communication equipment manufacturer, Agni Page has given Nepal a further thrust in its bid to becoming techno savvy and embracing the high-speed communication era. The company is also a provider of superior software and technical back-up by TECHINFO, and contemporary, state-of-the-art communication equipment by GLENAYRE, ALCATEL and IBM.

In its paging service, Agni Page provides a comprehensive range of utilities such as personal messaging, information services, global and national news broadcasts, customized news, e-mail paging, voice mail and operator dispatch services.

Affordability, value-for-money, easy access and mobility are some of the unique selling points that have helped Agni Page in successfully marketing the product. Its wide clientele base encompasses financial and educational institutions, business houses, social organizations, hotels, national and international organizations, ministries, embassies, communication services, professionals and even the ordinary man on the street.

“Keeping people connected even while on the move” is what the company believes in. And though competition in this growing industry, as elsewhere, is rife, its goal is to become Nepal’s largest and most effective information and wireless messaging provider. A close-knit team of highly skilled professionals, including qualified engineers, enterprising marketing personnel and round-the-clock customer service, combined with its effort to maintain the affordability of its product, is what Agni Page feels is the winning recipe that will eventually see it emerge as a leader in its field.

“We are here to stay and to render reliable service,” says Mr. Arjun Prasad Sharma, Managing Director of the company, adding, “and our team is well geared to meet the communication challenges of the year 2000 and beyond.”

Bhat Bhateni Super Market A shopping revolution

If there is a department store that gives you a well spangled range of merchandise under one roof, it is the Bhat Bhateni Super Market, the most frequented shopping address in Kathmandu. Despite skeptics’ predictions some 7 years ago that a supermarket would not thrive in a purely residential area, the department store, today, has proved not only to be a success story, but also a mammoth shopping institution of sorts that has won the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

The Bhat Bhateni story sounds incredible. Just seven years back, it had started as a humble provision store. Today it consists of five blocks that stock a mind-boggling variety of goods that range from hair pins to the latest electronic gizmos.

The main building has foodstuffs, household goods, clothes and footwear. The grocery occupies the ground floor. The floor above stocks a wide range of household items, crockery, crystalware, kitchen ware and fitness equipment. The second floor is dedicated to clothes and brings you the latest in fashion from countries as varied as Singapore and Britain to China and the USA.

The third floor sells trendy silk and French chiffon saris. Also available here are the world’s largest selling luggage brands – Samsonite and Echolac, shoes and handbags.

The wing behind the main block has a jewelry shop, pharmacy, beauty parlor, dry cleaning shop, florist, boutique selling salwar kurtas, and Perungo – a quaint little shop selling exclusive Nepalese hand-made products. What’s more, you’ll find here goods and services not found in any other department store in town. Just imagine – a motor bike showroom, photo processing lab and a communications center.

In a separate new wing, a floor is now devoted to electric and electronic goods by Sony, National, LG, Daewoo and Samsung. Cosmetics by Givenchy, Boucheron, Lancome, Pupa, Florence and Revlon also occupy a section of this wing.

More recent additions in a separate wing are an ice-cream parlor, a bakery and a fresh fruit and vegetable court. Shopping at Bhat Bhateni is indeed a pleasure, not only because of the immense varieties of consumer goods, but also because of the bargain prices you get here.

The man who has revolutionized the concept of shopping in Nepal is Mr. Min Bahadur Gurung, the Managing Director. Says he, “Sincerity, honesty and customer satisfaction are things that have motivated me… profit is at the bottom of my priorities.” His single-minded pursuit and grueling long hours are the recipes of the success story. Indeed, Mr. Gurung has made shopping a popular and diverse experience, adding a fresh and interesting appeal to what was previously a monotonous routine.
